Furman has found a replacement for Dan Brinkman, who retired in August after 30 years as a member of the athletics staff.

Kara Carpenter has been named Furman’s new associate athletics director for compliance and academics. The hiring was announced Monday by the Paladins’ senior women's administrator, Jodi Steffes.

“Kara was exactly who we were looking for to fill our leading role in the compliance office,” said Steffes.  “Her knowledge, attitude, work ethic, and overall experience with Division I compliance will make an immediate impact on our department.  She’s the perfect fit, and will blend well with our current administration, coaching staffs, and student-athletes.”

Carpenter comes to Furman following three years at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where she served as associate athletics director for compliance her final two years, handling all processes, procedures, and systems related to NCAA, conference, and institutional rules compliance.

 She began her tenure with the as an athletic academic advisor in October 2018 before securing the position of associate athletics director in March of 2019.

Prior to going to Stephen F. Austin, Carpenter served as an athletic academic advisor at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tenn., from 2016-18.

She served as director of NCAA compliance at both Texas A&M-Commerce (2015-16) and her alma mater, Western Carolina University (2013-15).

Carpenter earned her undergraduate degree in sports management in 2013 and later added a master of science in management from Austin Peay in 2017.

 She holds professional membership in the National Association for Athletics Compliance (NAAC).
